BUILDING HISTORY
|
| The building that now houses The Bee Hollow Market was built in 1901 and was Keller's Tin Shop. The building was held by the Keller family until it was
sold at public auction in 1977 to Paul Schorr who established a plant and garden center. The garden center remained until Mr. Schorr's retirement in 2006, at which
time the building was sold at public auction to Dave & Belinda Diecker who opened a coffee, tea, spice, and wine shop in May 2006.
A unique feature of the building are the Mesker Brothers cast-iron column storefront. The rounded shape of the columns are not typical on Mesker store fronts, which makes
them rather rare. The Mesker placards are visible on the front columns.
Just behind The Bee Hollow Market sits a Red Barn which is believed to be about 81 years old. At one time The Red Barn was used by Reinhardt's Butcher Shop as a site for butchering.
Ownership of the Red Barn has passed from Wiletta, Edgar, Leory & Mabel Kissel, to John & Mary Hale. From the Hales, the Red Barn was purchased by Ruth Schadle and her husband in 1972, who
owned it until Paul Schorr's purchase in 1983. Mr. Schorr used the Red Barn as storage of fertilizer products for his plant and garden center. Currently the Red Barn is owned by Dave & Belinda
Diecker. New uses for this historic building are in the planning stages.
Both buildings received Landmark Awards from the St. Clair County Historical Society in August 2000.
